How to make Puttu (Steamed rice cake)

It is a very healthy breakfast, easy to make with simple ingredients. In the market, different kinds of puttu makers are available, I have four different kinds, including a bamboo puttu maker. You can make the puttu in cylinder shape or coconut shell shape. In this posting, I am using the cylinder shape puttu maker.

  • Home made puttu flour 2 cups (see my other posting for making it)
  • Grated coconut 1/2 cup
  • Pinch of salt
  • Water

How to make

  • Take the flour in a wide vessel
  • Add water little by little and mix it until the flour gets the consistency of looking like bread crumbs (in the right consistency, you should able make a ball of flour in your hand and break it back into flour easily)
  • Add 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker and keep it in high heat on the stove top
  • Close the lid and wait for the steams
  • While waiting, let us fill the flour in the puttu maker
  • Take the puttu maker and place the round hole plate inside the cylindrical part
  • First add a little amount of grated coconut and add a handful of flour over that, then add another small layer of grated coconut and a handful of flour
  • Keep on layering like this until the flour reaches the top
  • At the end add some grated coconut on the top as well
  • Once the steam starts coming from the cooker, place the filled puttu maker on top of the cooker
  • After 4 to 5 minutes you will notice the steam coming out of the filled puttu maker
  • Wait for another minute and now the puttu should be ready
  • Use the stick came with the puttu maker to push the puttu out of the puttu maker
  • Hold the puttu maker horizontal to the plate and push from bottom using the stick, so that the puttu lands in the plate as shown below
  • The tasty puttu is ready to serve
  • You can eat it with multiple side dishes
  • Below are some popular side dishes
    • Cooked green gram and papadam
    • Chana curry
    • Chicken curry/fry
    • Banana, honey, sugar, etc.
